Wednesday 28th February – walk ***** Mojacar – sunny but very windy! Approx 5 miles out 2 hrs 30 mins.

Good night in the carpark for the Castillo Macenas just outside Mojacar but the light air days are now behind us as it’s blowing a SW gale which is cross off here and its more of the same for a couple of days I think! Even if you could find somewhere side shore it’s too much for all but flat water for the gear I have with me so we will just have to sit it out but at least the sun is out and its 20 degrees much better than Felixstowe where they have had loads of snow and its freezing!!!! After a relaxing start we decided to walk the opposite way today away from Mojacar to the lookout tower the Torre del Penon we walked to last year. We started off along the sandy beach with surfy waves breaking and the wind whipping the water off the top! We soon reached the small castle the Castillo Macenas surrounded by campervans parked closely together some could hardly see the sea - must be nuts! You then follow a dirt track up to the watch tower, this is open to vehicles but Mag is not keen to try it:) At the Torre del Penon we can’t resist climbing to the top despite the strong wind. Then a van drives up the track so we decide to walk that way and see where it goes. At Dutch couple arrive on electric bikes, they are the future but we would have a problem keeping them charged up without going on a campsite and that’s not happening! As the track rises and bends round many corners the scenery is amazing, high hills one side and cliffs with blue ocean the other:) There is a stunning villa on top of a hill offering stunning views. The road then leads down to a lovely beach and we only see the odd walker and cyclist. We see three walkers climbing up to a view point and decide to make that our turning point. The deserted beach is lovely with waves crashing up the rocks. We make it to the view point and can hardly stand in the wind. A narrow track leads down to yet another beautiful beach. Apparently, they filmed Treasure Island here many years ago :) There was even a small beach bar here that only opens June to September but a small German campervan was parked so we could drive it easily! After walking the length of the small beach to some great rocks at the end we turned and headed back. We met the odd Spanish mountain biker and vehicle but to be honest we are not overly impressed with the locals to the main part they are surly, rarely look you in the eye or say good morning let alone raise a hand in thanks if you stand to one side to let them pass:( I didn’t take the GPS sadly but we estimate we covered 5 miles and where out for 2 hours 30 minutes. We had lunch and decided to stay here for another night and thought we would be OK as the winds had gone light. We again read, dozed and watched the Gannets and Terns diving for fish. As darkness full we had Lidl lasagne and sadly the wind has picked up really strong again and is buffeting the van a little but we think we will be OK?

Thursday 1st March – travel, Mc Donald’s and short walk – Rain and strong winds :(

We survived ‘Big Wednesday’ Night winds, a bumpy time with the offshore wind rocking the van but woke to sunshine and light winds. Mag did her exercises but by the time we had had breakfast and I started mine it had clouded over and I was only half way through when it started to rain:( We quickly packed up and headed off, it is a pretty road to Carboneras but spoilt by several apartment/hotels having been started but long been left unfinished:( With the weather bad it was not worth driving through the beautiful Parque Natural Cabo de Gata where we had a great time last year so headed to Almeria in search of Mc Donald’s and what a rundown, graffitied s**t hole that was:( We found Mc D’s easily and the wi-fi was painfully slow but I managed to upload my best day at La Franqui after an hour:( At least we were not missing anything as it was tipping it down! With a Lidl just up, the road we were ready to look for an overnight spot. We tried the seafront in Almeria but didn’t fancy it so continued along the coast. We haven’t been this way before as headed up to the Sierra Nevada mountains last time but the weather isn’t looking too promising for a week so want to avoid the mountains until it is better! It started off OK with a nice cliff road but then as you near the flatlands of the Roquetas de Mar it was mile after mile of the worst that Spain has to offer soulless holiday accommodation locally known as ‘Urbanizacion’ and best avoided! Things improved slightly at Las Marinas as the buildings thinned and we came to the salt works now, I think, a National park with flamingos. The road came to a dead-end so we turned back to Playa Selena and found a carpark by the beach. In fact, there is lots of parking here amongst the empty holiday apartments and every retired German who owns a campervan and isn’t hiding in the reeds where we were the other day was parked here and for the life of me I could not see why???? The forecast gale had now arrived and it was still raining, our sliding door window is leaking badly, they are really crap and we will have to look into having them replaced when we get home with a non-opening window, much more secure too! We parked across a couple of parking spaces so we didn’t get a huge white elephant beside us and had a late lunch. Then big lorries started to arrive to be loaded by with sand from the beach, a digger had made a big pile and they were taking it off to make another beach elsewhere! Three ended up parking the night right next to us!! The sun came out briefly so we went for a quick bracing walk along the beach before returning to the van. I read while Mag tried for an hour to sort out our breakdown insurance renewal on the phone and what a pain in the arse that turned into – she only rang to change the card number as the other one had been stopped due to the break in but they had changed the terms of the policy and it needed a lot of sorting!!!! She managed it in the end. Looks like its going to be another night of strong winds, getting fed up with it now let’s hope it calms down soon!
